In this interview, we chat with tennis coach and author, Uros Budimac. Uros has coached tennis for about 20 years and is certified in Canada, the US, and Spain.
Uros recently released a new book, Mine: An Illustrated Guide to Women’s Doubles, (on Amazon here).
In this conversation, we talk about some of the content in his book:
- Doubles situations that every player encounters and how to improve them.
- How to move at the net like a Tango dancer.
- The importance of transition volleys and consistency when moving forward.
- How to cover the court with your partner.
- Why it’s important to enjoy the grind that getting better at tennis is.
We also discuss how Uros got into tennis, why he loves coaching, and, of course, how to make doubles more popular.

- Doubles Situations
- Among the many great doubles situations in Uros’ book, we discussed three:
- (1) Tango moves, a new way to think about movement at the net.
- (2) First things first, volley, the importance of a good first volley.
- (3) Give them a third, a new way to think about court coverage.
- Among the many great doubles situations in Uros’ book, we discussed three:
- Transition Volleys
- When transitioning from the baseline to the net, focus on playing a solid approach and first volley instead of just going for pace.
- In the long run, making fewer errors is better than making more winners, and you can’t control the outcome, only the input.
- Enjoying the Grind
- Tennis is hard work but it’s also a lot of fun, so you just have to remember that it will be hard but that it’s very rewarding.
- Some days will be good, some will be bad, and most will be a grind, so don’t beat yourself up and just enjoy the process.
- Uros’ Favorites
- Tournament: Australian Open
- Tennis Book: Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert
- Non-tennis Book: Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Fitness
- Doubles Play: Serving a wide kick serve on the ad side in Australian formation, and then cheating to his forehand to hit down-the-middle.

Thank you Will for having me on your podcast. You are doing a great job with promoting this amazing game, and I wish you all the best in your endeavors to come. I look forward to meeting you in person one day, and chatting away more.

Thanks Uros! It was fun 🙂
Great podcast. I relate to everything Uros said, especially about “change”. My wife and I play a lot of mixed and she plays on 3 women’s teams. As Uros said, women rule the club doubles world. I just ordered Uros’ book for her.

Thanks Guy! It’s a great book. The tactics are definitely good for ladies, mixed, and men’s doubles 🙂
Thank you Guy!
I hope your wife enjoys the read and the illustrations… would love to hear which one of the 20 scenarios she relates to most:)
All the best,
Uros
